Empathy is like a universal solvent. Any problem immersed in empathy becomes soluble. – Simon Baron-Cohen, a British clinical psychologist and professor of developmental psychopathology at the University of Cambridge.
Comprehending the emotions of others is an essential ability not just in professional settings but in life itself. It can help us settle disputes, create deeper impact, and strengthen our bonds with family, friends, clients, customers, and coworkers.
The Center for Creative Leadership did a study to determine if empathy influences a manager’s job performance, they analyzed data from 6,731 mid- to upper-middle-level managers in 38 countries. The leaders in their study were rated on their level of empathy. They found that empathy in the workplace is positively related to job performance.
While most of us feel comfortable picking up new technical skills, we might not feel as prepared to improve our interpersonal abilities. The world has not always celebrated people who talk openly about their own emotions so thinking about how others feel is a significant leap!
A study by Catalyst found that empathy is the most important leadership skill, and it has significant constructive effects on innovation, cooperation, and mental health. The same study also found that employees with high-empathy leaders reported higher engagement and inclusion at work. Managers who practiced empathetic leadership toward direct reports were viewed as better performers by their bosses.
The ability to be compassionate and connect with others is critical to our lives, both personally and professionally. Demonstrating empathy in the workplace — a key part of emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness — also improves human interactions in general and can lead to more effective communication and positive outcomes, in both work and home settings.

In my work with managers in high growth startups and storied organisations, I have seen these strategies work really well for managers wanting to practice and hone the skill of empathy -
Active Listening Take the time to truly listen to your team members, not just hearing their words but understanding their emotions, concerns, and perspectives. Don’t be rushed to move to the next most important agenda item, instead be present.
Put Yourself in Their ShoesTry to understand the challenges, pressures, and motivations of your team members by imagining yourself in their positions. This helps in developing empathy and relating to their experiences.
Show Genuine InterestDemonstrate a sincere interest in your team members' lives, both personally and professionally. Ask about their well-being, their goals, and their experiences, and let them know you genuinely care about their success and happiness.
Practice Open-MindednessAvoid making assumptions or rushing to judgment. Be open to different ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking. This fosters an environment where people feel valued and understood.
Provide Support and UnderstandingBe compassionate and supportive during challenging times. Offer help, resources, and understanding when team members face personal or professional difficulties, showing that you are there to support them.
The Ripple Effect of Empathy
Beyond its immediate benefits, empathy creates a ripple effect that extends beyond the workplace. When employees experience empathy within their professional lives, they are more likely to carry this value into their interactions outside of work. This contributes to a broader culture of compassion, understanding, and social responsibility.
In today's ever-changing work environment, being understanding and considerate isn't just a nice-to-have skill; it's a smart move. When companies realize how much empathy can boost productivity, communication, and overall happiness at work, they can actively work on making it a priority. This means leaders leading with empathy, training programs focusing on it, and strategies to resolve conflicts with understanding. A workplace that values empathy sets itself up for teamwork, creativity, and long-term success.
